Do Ballast Water Management Systems Reduce Phytoplankton Introductions to Canadian Waters?

چکیده

Global coastal aquatic ecosystems are negatively impacted by the introduction of harmful species through discharge ships’ ballast water. To reduce discharges organisms and pathogens, such as toxic phytoplankton species, ships now transitioning to use water management systems (BWMS) instead exchange (BWE). This study examines abundance diversity in managed BWMS (or a combination both BWE + BWMS) comparison those alone (collected from arriving Canada’s Pacific coast 2017–2018 2008, respectively). The were also examined relation key variables salinity age. Total was significantly lower preserved samples either or compared alone. Abundances higher than observed fresh (unpreserved) at time collection, with all meeting international limits for number viable ≥10 <50 μm minimum dimension (based on six 1-mL live counts). While there no apparent influence factors treatment type [e.g., ultraviolet (UV) chlorine], presence filtration, salinity, age, nor location last uptake abundances samples, power detect differences may be limited sample size. Ballast tended have although difference not statistically significant – additional research into community composition cells could valuable discriminate risk associated surviving treatment.

CMOS based image cytometry for detection of phytoplankton in ballast water.

We introduce an image cytometer (I-CYT) for the analysis of phytoplankton in fresh and marine water environments. A linear quantification of cell numbers was observed covering several orders of magnitude using cultures of Tetraselmis and Nannochloropsis measured by autofluorescence in a laboratory environment. We assessed the functionality of the system outside the laboratory by phytoplankton q...

A Comparison of Microbial Water Quality and Diversity for Ballast and Tropical Harbor Waters

Indicator organisms and antibiotic resistance were used as a proxy to measure microbial water quality of ballast tanks of ships, and surface waters in a tropical harbor. The survival of marine bacteria in ballast tanks appeared to diminish over longer water retention time, with a reduction of cell viability observed after a week based on heterotrophic plate counts. Pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA ge...

Quantitative analyses of pollution-indicator and pathogenic bacteria in Mumbai waters from ballast water exchange perspective.

As large numbers of ships either take in ballast from or discharge their ballast into the Mumbai Harbor region, it is pertinent to quantify microorganisms of health concerns and suggest on the suitability of water for ballasting purposes. To meet with this main aim, a selected set of general and pathogenic bacterial groups and their seasonal variations were studied from the Mumbai Harbor area. ...

How Do Sinking Phytoplankton Species Manage to Persist? How Do Sinking Phytoplankton Species Manage to Persist?

Phytoplankton requires light for photosynthesis, but most phytoplankton species are heavier than water and sink. How can these sinking species persist? Here we show, by means of an advection-di usion-reaction equation of light-limited phytoplankton, that the answer lies in the turbulent motion of water that re-disperses phytoplankton over the vertical water column. More speci cally, we show tha...
